ghoulish goodness

This is the week we all get high on sugar from hundreds of little Halloween treats we will be snacking on for days after Trick or Treating is even over.  No doubt it is the highlight of the fall season for me!

I love Halloween themed cakes simply because you have the platform for dark and macabre creativity which you can never really express in a typical wedding or birthday cake.

I recently made a couple of Halloween themed birthday cakes- one for a Tim Burton (Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas) fan, and the other for a little boy whose birthday falls on Halloween night.

golden globes

A craftmates friend, Claire, recently celebrated her 50th birthday and our dear Virna and Aimee threw her a Golden Globes themed party that is quite fitting for the fabulous lady that she is.  I was very excited and challenged to do this cake for her.

The base of this creation is the actual cake- dark chocolate with dark chocolate ganache filling, while the trophy stand and the actual golden globe are made with rice crispy treats, covered in marshmallow fondant and airbrushed with edible metallic tone.

I replicated the trophy, its actual size bearing the logo of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the governing body of the Golden Globes.

Happy Birthday, Claire!

Have a sweet week!

of kors!!

Men will never understand women's relationship with shoes.  We can never have too much.  A new pair of shoes can make any woman feel alive, happy and content.  It's true.

When I feel the blues, my great picker-upper is trying on ridiculously expensive stilettos, walk around the store in them and I feel relaxed and happy.  No, I don't buy them. I just love the feel of walking tall in a pair of impractical shoes I cannot afford and in that fleeting moment, I am in my happy place.  (Please tell me Im not the only one who does this?)

Anyway, another shoe-holic celebrated her 40th birthday this past weekend. Darlene loves her Michael Kors shoes, and her sweet hubby surprised her with a fabulous party and a cake that represents her love of shoes.  I was lucky enough to be part of this happy celebration and made this all edible cake for her...

It's not the real thing, but I can tell she was happy with it, no? :-)

Have a sweet week, everyone!

word world

Navjot Kaur is a celebrated children's book author whose first published book, A Lion's Mane, won the 2010 Skipping Stones Honours Award for Multicultural and International Awareness.

I was tickled pink when Navjot approached me  not so long ago to create a birthday cake for her wee one, Jehnihal, who was turning 5.  He is a huge fan of PBS Kids' Word World, an Emmy Award winning TV series funded by the US Department of Education as part of the Read To Learn literacy programme targeted to 3-7 year olds.

The show features the main character Dog as he embarks on different adventures every episode, where the only way to save the day is to "build a word".  The show airs in Canada as well, and is one of my children's favourite shows to watch.

This 2 tiered cake is the first all-organic cake I've made.  Both tiers are banana-chocolate flavoured with Swiss meringue buttercream.  Everything here is edible.

Have a sweet wonderful week!

a jungle party

Baby Ibrahim recently celebrated his first birthday party with a jungle themed celebration.  I created this three tiered cake (lemon, chocolate and strawberry shortcake) topped with little edible baby monkeys all over.

Thank you for looking! And may y'all have a sweet week!

Salud!

It always makes me happy to do a 3 dimensional cake.  It's the challenge in the construction and artistry  that keeps me excited and inspired when I do my cakes.

I did this wine cake for a returning client who hosted a surprise birthday for her sister's 30th.  She is a wine lover with a dream of owning her own vineyard one day.

The cake seems apt, don't you think?

The bottle is made of rice crispie treats, topping the vanilla strawberry shortcake covered in faux wooden panels.

Have a glorious week, everyone!

Stay sweet!

antique box

The client request was for a Tiffany box cake.

But I had a different vision for Sarah Jo, multi-talented painter who celebrated her 9th birthday last weekend.  Her mom was generous enough to give me my artistic freedom and let my imagination run wild with this project.

I kept the Tiffany blue, and created this antique jewelry box cake, fitting for an old soul with a heart of (white) gold.

Have a glorious week!

Stay sweet,

turning japanese

There is a small nondescript hole-in-the-wall near where I live that serves arguably the best and freshest sushi you can find, dare I say, in Eastern Ontario.  I love going to this Japanese restaurant with friends and family, but the best time I have is when I am alone with a good book.  Just me and never-ending sashimi, sushi and maki, not wasting precious moments with chitchat.  That's my happy place right there.

I LOVE Japanese food.  My parents had me eating raw tuna and salmon with overpowering wasabi at a tender young age.  Growing up, every Japanese restaurant we ate at always had that Zen-like atmosphere, and I've carried that feeling with me to this day every time I have a bite of sushi.

It was therefore a delight to receive a request from my friend Janet to do a sushi-themed cake for her daughter's birthday get together.

Everything here is edible, including the chopsticks, soy sauce bowl
and Kate's name, all made with marshmallow fondant.
Underneath the marble looking slab, lined with wood
is dark chocolate cake with dark chocolate ganache filling.

Every rice grain,  all cucumber and crab cuts were individually shaped,
all made of marshmallow fondant

I hope you find a little time for yourself this week to find your own happy place and enjoy a good meal.

Arigatou gozaimasu!

sleep-over!

Do you remember your first sleep-over party?  The details are now lost on me, but I think I may have been at least 13 before my mom allowed to me to spend a night in a house other than our own.  And back then (in my world at least), a sleep-over did not require printed invitations, catered food, crafts nor cupcakes and cakes.

A VHS tape and a bowl of popcorn.  That's all we needed, and that's all we got.

For her 10th birthday, my neighbour Kailey invited 4 of her bestfriends to her house and had a sleep-over party.  Her mom had asked me to do this cake as her special birthday surprise.

This all-edible 3 dimensional creation is made of dark chocolate cake with chocolate ganache filling.

Is this how you remember your sleep-over parties to be?

Sweet dreams!

a magical birthday

A craftmates collaboration that is closest to my heart is my daughter Sofia's 7th birthday party.  Sofia, like any girl her age, is obsessed with the Disney Channel's Wizards of Waverly Place, so a magic themed birthday party naturally came into play.

Guests were greeted with a personalized wizard hat, a glow stick that served as a wand (or a necklace) and a cape magically sewed by Virns.

A makeshift craft table was provided for the kids who wanted to add more sparkle and oomph to their wizard hats.

Craftmates' ever-present photo booth decked with special Cricut cutouts for Sofia was a treat for the guests.

The main event of the party was Bob the Magician's magic show where the kids were entertained with funny and amazing tricks featuring the birthday girl as his special assistant.

Aimee adorned the whole house with purple, black, gold and green pompoms, another staple in any craftmates party.  Irma provided the backdrop design and signage.(And everything paper-related for the party!)

I made Sofia a cupcake tree, topped with an 8 inch dark chocolate cake with her little edible replica wearing the exact same dress.  It was my little surprise for her that day.

The different flavored cupcakes came in different cupcake sleeves with varying colors, prints and designs.  I made this through the magic of Cricut Lite's Cupcake Wrappers.

Sofia's guests were each given a magician's box filled with special treats and tricks to take home.  This perfect giveaway is from Birthday Express. Fabulous gift tags were provided by no other than our resident paper addict, Irma.

23 kids under one roof... I shudder at the thought of having that much kids inside my living room.  I remember chaos and mess, but I will never forget their happy faces, and the beaming smile of my beautiful daughter.  It was truly a magical party.

Thank you for stopping by.

Have a sweet and magical Thursday,

Bebsy
