cake emergency

Yes, this is an all-edible cake (except for the lights that are battery operated).  It is for Gary, a selfless and hardworking paramedic from Toronto who recently celebrated his 50th birthday.

The whole structure is made of vanilla cake with strawberry Swiss meringue buttercream filling.

I attempted to replicate the actual ambulance that Gary uses and put in working flashing lights to complete the look.

It was a treat for me to create this cake for someone who has given so much for the community.

I wish you all a safe and wonderful week!

ghoulish goodness

This is the week we all get high on sugar from hundreds of little Halloween treats we will be snacking on for days after Trick or Treating is even over.  No doubt it is the highlight of the fall season for me!

I love Halloween themed cakes simply because you have the platform for dark and macabre creativity which you can never really express in a typical wedding or birthday cake.

I recently made a couple of Halloween themed birthday cakes- one for a Tim Burton (Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas) fan, and the other for a little boy whose birthday falls on Halloween night.

A Nightmare Before Christmas Sweet 16th birthday cake

Have a Safe & Happy Halloween!!

cake for a dad

Brooks is Daddy to 2 adorable boys, Drew and James, and hubby to my dear friend Despina. Last weekend, he celebrated his 40th birthday with a surprise party organized by his sweet wife making this also an even more special Father's Day celebration. This all-edible cake is part of his surprise, incorporating 3 of his most favourite hobbies: camping, hockey and skateboarding.

Bottom tier is  Brooks' favourite cake, ginger carrot cake with cream cheese filling and middle tier and the tent is chocolate cake with dark chocolate ganache.

I hope you had a wonderful Father's Day weekend.  Have a sweet week, everyone!

golden globes

A craftmates friend, Claire, recently celebrated her 50th birthday and our dear Virna and Aimee threw her a Golden Globes themed party that is quite fitting for the fabulous lady that she is.  I was very excited and challenged to do this cake for her.

The base of this creation is the actual cake- dark chocolate with dark chocolate ganache filling, while the trophy stand and the actual golden globe are made with rice crispy treats, covered in marshmallow fondant and airbrushed with edible metallic tone.

I replicated the trophy, its actual size bearing the logo of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the governing body of the Golden Globes.

Happy Birthday, Claire!

Have a sweet week!

of kors!!

Men will never understand women's relationship with shoes.  We can never have too much.  A new pair of shoes can make any woman feel alive, happy and content.  It's true.

When I feel the blues, my great picker-upper is trying on ridiculously expensive stilettos, walk around the store in them and I feel relaxed and happy.  No, I don't buy them. I just love the feel of walking tall in a pair of impractical shoes I cannot afford and in that fleeting moment, I am in my happy place.  (Please tell me Im not the only one who does this?)

Anyway, another shoe-holic celebrated her 40th birthday this past weekend. Darlene loves her Michael Kors shoes, and her sweet hubby surprised her with a fabulous party and a cake that represents her love of shoes.  I was lucky enough to be part of this happy celebration and made this all edible cake for her...

It's not the real thing, but I can tell she was happy with it, no? :-)

Have a sweet week, everyone!

silver

I have been married for 11 years now.  I love my husband to death but all you married folks out there know that marriage is a LOT of hard work.  (Remember Oscar Best Director winner Ben Affleck's speech? LOL)  It is for this reason that I have deep appreciation for couples who celebrate longevity of their union.

I enjoy creating wedding cakes because of its representation of true love and a dream of lifelong togetherness.  Anniversary cakes to me have a totally different meaning.  It is a celebration of the work and the devotion to the commitment and the promise of togetherness.  It makes me happy when people celebrate wedding anniversaries.  Silver, pearl, ruby, gold and diamond most especially.

They've made it this far without killing each other? Yay! ...Now let's eat cake!

Thess and Melvyn recently celebrated their silver anniversary, and I created this
3 tiered all chocolate cake for the beautiful couple.

I hope you all have a wonderful week!  Stay sweet!

word world

Navjot Kaur is a celebrated children's book author whose first published book, A Lion's Mane, won the 2010 Skipping Stones Honours Award for Multicultural and International Awareness.

I was tickled pink when Navjot approached me  not so long ago to create a birthday cake for her wee one, Jehnihal, who was turning 5.  He is a huge fan of PBS Kids' Word World, an Emmy Award winning TV series funded by the US Department of Education as part of the Read To Learn literacy programme targeted to 3-7 year olds.

The show features the main character Dog as he embarks on different adventures every episode, where the only way to save the day is to "build a word".  The show airs in Canada as well, and is one of my children's favourite shows to watch.

This 2 tiered cake is the first all-organic cake I've made.  Both tiers are banana-chocolate flavoured with Swiss meringue buttercream.  Everything here is edible.

Have a sweet wonderful week!

my birthday boi

My Portuguese husband was born and raised on a small island in the West Indies.  The Caribbean culture is very much part of our lives.  We dance to soca and chill out to reggae music.  We eat fried plantains, jerk chicken and stewed goat.  We have a need to visit the islands every year, submerge ourselves in the Carribean Sea and feel the heat of the Antilles on our Skin.

He recently celebrated his birthday, and although I usually do not make cakes for us both, I decided to surprise him with a special one not only to wish him a another year of bliss but also to celebrate his roots and culture.

I handpainted everything on the cake, using freestyle art with edible paint.

Enjoy the week!  I hope you all had a wonderful Easter!!

Stay sweet,

My friend Roger's mom recently celebrated her 65th birthday with a special surprise party given by her family.  Her 4 grandchildren designed this cake, featuring their Grandma's favourite colours.

Happy 65th, Grandma!  Wishing you a long healthy life filled with joy!

Salud!

It always makes me happy to do a 3 dimensional cake.  It's the challenge in the construction and artistry  that keeps me excited and inspired when I do my cakes.

I did this wine cake for a returning client who hosted a surprise birthday for her sister's 30th.  She is a wine lover with a dream of owning her own vineyard one day.

The cake seems apt, don't you think?

The bottle is made of rice crispie treats, topping the vanilla strawberry shortcake covered in faux wooden panels.

Have a glorious week, everyone!

Stay sweet!

antique box

The client request was for a Tiffany box cake.

But I had a different vision for Sarah Jo, multi-talented painter who celebrated her 9th birthday last weekend.  Her mom was generous enough to give me my artistic freedom and let my imagination run wild with this project.

I kept the Tiffany blue, and created this antique jewelry box cake, fitting for an old soul with a heart of (white) gold.

Have a glorious week!

Stay sweet,

book of love

Jinkie and Michael share a love for books. Ironically, they first met aboard a cruise ship named 'The Titanic' (seriously?! someone named a cruise ship The Titanic??), with unfavourable first impressions. They eventually realized how much they have in common, literature playing a huge part. It is from this passion that their friendship blossomed into something deeper and stronger.

On the anniversary of their first date, their love story has culminated into this ultimate sign of love and commitment.  I am fortunate enough to be part of this beautiful union, providing the couple with this 4 tiered literature-themed wedding cake with a touch of Asian flair.

Share your passion with somebody you love this week.

Stay sweet!
