it's a circus celebration

After attending a day camp at the circus last summer, my DD developed a fascination for all things acrobatics.  She looked forward to jumping endlessly at the trampoline, braving a tightrope walk, practising her somersaults and swinging on the trapeze.  And of course, good ol’ hula hoops.  Soon after, we found ourselves a regular at a local gymnastics class and then, preparing for a circus-themed party.

Last weekend, we celebrated her fifth birthday under the big top.  And oh what fun everybody had!  Here are some photos from the happy occasion.

Craftmates was there to help bring to life another memorable dessert table.

Here's a close up of what's at the table setting...

The kids' loot bags are my labor of love.  I sewed all 20 drawstring bags, handmade the girls’ hairclips and created pretty packaging for the chocolate goodies and the scarf set.

Judging by the smile of the celebrant, I think she had a blast!

ghoulish goodness

This is the week we all get high on sugar from hundreds of little Halloween treats we will be snacking on for days after Trick or Treating is even over.  No doubt it is the highlight of the fall season for me!

I love Halloween themed cakes simply because you have the platform for dark and macabre creativity which you can never really express in a typical wedding or birthday cake.

I recently made a couple of Halloween themed birthday cakes- one for a Tim Burton (Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas) fan, and the other for a little boy whose birthday falls on Halloween night.

polka dots and rainbows

Last weekend, we threw a “Rainbow and Polka Dots” baby shower for one of our friends.  Of course, that meant I got to create some crafty stuff for the mom-to-be.

First off, I made her a rainbow diaper cake.  I used the “no roll” diaper cake tutorial which I got here.  I love combining various rainbow colours to come up with this fun diaper cake.

I used 12x12 cardstocks from various companies (mainly Stampin’ Up and DCWV).  The big flowers are cut outs from Stampin’ Up and the smaller ones are those canned Prima flowers from Michael’s which I have since forever.  So glad to finally be able to use them.

The topper is a banner I made using My Creative Time’s banner dies and Papertrey’s Headline Alphabet dies.  I also used various ribbons and twines from my stash.

Here's a top view of the cake so you can see the diapers….

This cake sat on my desk for a week before the party and I simply loved waking up to it!

Next up is a notebook for guests to write their well wishes and advice for the expectant parents.  I used various dies from Papertrey and MFT (Hanging Out, Heart to Heart, Flip Flops and grass dies) to create this fun laundry scene (as what my DD calls it).

I carried the same baby clothes theme inside the book…

Next is a card I made for the parents-to-be, using the adorable giraffe from Papertrey's Sweet Baby set.

I actually made a few to have on hand for the many babies that will be coming in the next few months…

Lastly is the dessert table… Fun rainbow colours with some sprinkles of polka dots!

I also dressed up some lollipops using this cute little lollipop holder which I got from My Creative Time. The tag is from Papertrey's Tiny Tags set. We gave this out to the guests, young and old alike.

golden globes

A craftmates friend, Claire, recently celebrated her 50th birthday and our dear Virna and Aimee threw her a Golden Globes themed party that is quite fitting for the fabulous lady that she is.  I was very excited and challenged to do this cake for her.

The base of this creation is the actual cake- dark chocolate with dark chocolate ganache filling, while the trophy stand and the actual golden globe are made with rice crispy treats, covered in marshmallow fondant and airbrushed with edible metallic tone.

I replicated the trophy, its actual size bearing the logo of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the governing body of the Golden Globes.

Happy Birthday, Claire!

Have a sweet week!

diaper cake

Last weekend, we had a surprise baby shower for our friends who are having a baby girl this spring.   The mommy-to-be is especially fond of Disney princesses so we decided to give them a royal celebration.   I got  the tutorial for this no-roll diaper cake here. Most tutorials call for the diapers to be individually rolled up.  So glad I found this no-roll tutorial which was a huge time saver!

Here is my princess diaper cake.

Here's the top view of the cake where you can see the no-roll diapers inside.

To decorate it, I used some My Mind’s Eye patterned paper for wrapping the cake layers.  Then I used my Lil Inker’s bow die to embellish.  The banner is from MME and I used Papertrey’s Modern Alphabet die for their sweet baby’s name.  Of course, a princess cake will not be complete without feathers, tulle and a tiara!

I also baked some cupcakes  which I covered with pink cupcake sleeves I cut from my beloved (but often neglected) Cricut.    The “A Royal Celebration” sentiment is from My Cute Stamps’ Royal Celebration set.

This is how I displayed them at the dessert table...

And this is how they all look together...
