cake emergency

Yes, this is an all-edible cake (except for the lights that are battery operated).  It is for Gary, a selfless and hardworking paramedic from Toronto who recently celebrated his 50th birthday.

The whole structure is made of vanilla cake with strawberry Swiss meringue buttercream filling.

I attempted to replicate the actual ambulance that Gary uses and put in working flashing lights to complete the look.

It was a treat for me to create this cake for someone who has given so much for the community.

I wish you all a safe and wonderful week!

ghoulish goodness

This is the week we all get high on sugar from hundreds of little Halloween treats we will be snacking on for days after Trick or Treating is even over.  No doubt it is the highlight of the fall season for me!

I love Halloween themed cakes simply because you have the platform for dark and macabre creativity which you can never really express in a typical wedding or birthday cake.

I recently made a couple of Halloween themed birthday cakes- one for a Tim Burton (Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas) fan, and the other for a little boy whose birthday falls on Halloween night.

eat this!

I was planning my daughter's birthday party one year when I read a magazine article about fun creative kids party giveaways, an alternative to the usual bags of dollar store items.  On it were innovative ideas that included a variety of edible gifts including a miniature hard candy sculpture of an actual loot bag.

Because I have no sugar sculpture skills, I developed my own version using marshmallow fondant, brownies and store bought candies and made each bag personalized.

The kids' surprised reactions when they received their loot bags were priceless!

Here's another version of the edible loot bags I did for a client...

cake for a dad

Brooks is Daddy to 2 adorable boys, Drew and James, and hubby to my dear friend Despina. Last weekend, he celebrated his 40th birthday with a surprise party organized by his sweet wife making this also an even more special Father's Day celebration. This all-edible cake is part of his surprise, incorporating 3 of his most favourite hobbies: camping, hockey and skateboarding.

Bottom tier is  Brooks' favourite cake, ginger carrot cake with cream cheese filling and middle tier and the tent is chocolate cake with dark chocolate ganache.

I hope you had a wonderful Father's Day weekend.  Have a sweet week, everyone!

of kors!!

Men will never understand women's relationship with shoes.  We can never have too much.  A new pair of shoes can make any woman feel alive, happy and content.  It's true.

When I feel the blues, my great picker-upper is trying on ridiculously expensive stilettos, walk around the store in them and I feel relaxed and happy.  No, I don't buy them. I just love the feel of walking tall in a pair of impractical shoes I cannot afford and in that fleeting moment, I am in my happy place.  (Please tell me Im not the only one who does this?)

Anyway, another shoe-holic celebrated her 40th birthday this past weekend. Darlene loves her Michael Kors shoes, and her sweet hubby surprised her with a fabulous party and a cake that represents her love of shoes.  I was lucky enough to be part of this happy celebration and made this all edible cake for her...

It's not the real thing, but I can tell she was happy with it, no? :-)

Have a sweet week, everyone!

Salud!

It always makes me happy to do a 3 dimensional cake.  It's the challenge in the construction and artistry  that keeps me excited and inspired when I do my cakes.

I did this wine cake for a returning client who hosted a surprise birthday for her sister's 30th.  She is a wine lover with a dream of owning her own vineyard one day.

The cake seems apt, don't you think?

The bottle is made of rice crispie treats, topping the vanilla strawberry shortcake covered in faux wooden panels.

Have a glorious week, everyone!

Stay sweet!

antique box

The client request was for a Tiffany box cake.

But I had a different vision for Sarah Jo, multi-talented painter who celebrated her 9th birthday last weekend.  Her mom was generous enough to give me my artistic freedom and let my imagination run wild with this project.

I kept the Tiffany blue, and created this antique jewelry box cake, fitting for an old soul with a heart of (white) gold.

Have a glorious week!

Stay sweet,

book of love

Jinkie and Michael share a love for books. Ironically, they first met aboard a cruise ship named 'The Titanic' (seriously?! someone named a cruise ship The Titanic??), with unfavourable first impressions. They eventually realized how much they have in common, literature playing a huge part. It is from this passion that their friendship blossomed into something deeper and stronger.

On the anniversary of their first date, their love story has culminated into this ultimate sign of love and commitment.  I am fortunate enough to be part of this beautiful union, providing the couple with this 4 tiered literature-themed wedding cake with a touch of Asian flair.

Share your passion with somebody you love this week.

Stay sweet!
