A Tote Bag

Last week, I was rummaging through my fabric stash and found a lightweight corduroy material that I bought from Jo-Ann's during a trip to the States. I decided to use it to make a reversible tote bag from a pattern I downloaded from verypurpleperson. The online instructions were easy to follow that the project took me just an afternoon to make.

The other side

I've made tote bags before but this is the first time I created one with “darts”. The technique seemed intimidating to a novice sewer like me but after practicing on a piece of scrap fabric, I found that it wasn't too bad after all.

Yeah, I made a dart!

I also used a different colour of thread on the bobbin to match the reversible side.
Excuse the sausage finger and unmanicured tip

Eventually when I become a more advanced sewer, I hope to be able to tackle more complicated projects. For now, I really enjoy sewing tote bags because they are useful, practical, and simple to make.

Happy Sewing!

  1. Virna,

Your tote bag looks great. I think you are more advanced than I am. Your product looks finished and beautiful. I really need to download a pattern and learn some new techniques. Great job!

  7. I love the color combo. As a novice, it is nice to see projects that look hard, but aren't. I would love it if you would share this on my linky party Tout It Tuesday. http://www.claimingourspace.com/2012/06/tout-it-tuesday-9.html

  8. It's lovely - a definite success! I am a novice sewer and have made quite a few different things but never a tote! It's high up on my list but I always seems to have another project that needs finishing first. I'm looking forward to toting around something I've made though - must be satisfying!
